When a learner driver gets behind the wheel, they’re filled with such excitement at their new found freedom. Having just been to driving school and passed their driving test, they’re no longer reliant on their parents and they can now drive themselves, friends and family about town, having fun and creating memories that will last a lifetime.
As a novice, they’re not familiar with driving. They may have been a passenger on the roads but it’s an entirely different story when getting behind the wheel. It makes sense to think that the driving test is not the end of the learning process, it is in fact it the beginning of their driving education.
As a new driver, they’re bound to make mistakes because of their lack of experience on the road. This is to be expected and isn’t a sign of a bad driver. The good news is, most mistakes by learners and new drivers are common to all new drivers and are easily corrected through taking extra driving lessons at driving school or a qualified driving instructor.
One of the biggest mistakes for a learner driver is their ability to be easily distracted while driving. This can be a big issue if driving is a large part of their social life. They’re friends are just as excited as they are and this can lead to accidents. It’s no reason to restrict them from driving but it is important you sit down and discuss it with them.
As teenagers at that age, don’t suggest their lack of experience is going to lead to an accident but focus on all the variables the road gives us. A good piece of advice is “It’s not the accident you see coming that could be dangerous but the ones you don’t see coming.”
Let them understand that accidents on the road occur due to a large range of things. Whether changing the radio or talking on a mobile phone, other people doing these things pose a risk to them regardless of whether they are doing this as well.
Most of all, have faith in your child to do the right thing. If you send them to driving school and they undertake driving lessons from a driving instructor, you can rest assure you are doing everything possible to assist them at this exciting point in their life.
